Portsmouth, Louise de Kéroualle or Querouaille, Duchess of 1649-1734
French courtesan, mistress of Charles II of Britain

Born in Brittany, she went to England in 1670 in the train of Henrietta-Anne, Duchess of Orléans, Charles II's cherished sister, ostensibly as a lady-in-waiting, but secretly charged to influence the king in favour of the French alliance. Charles made her his mistress and ennobled her (1673) and her son, who became Duke of Richmond. Rapacious and haughty, 'Madame Carwell', as she became known, was universally detested.
