Primo de Rivera (y Orbaneja), Miguel, Marqués de Estella 1870-1930
Spanish general and politician

Born in Jerez de la Frontera, he served in Cuba and the Philippines during the Spanish-American War (1898), and in Morocco (1909-13). Military Governor of Cadiz (1915-19), Valencia (1919-22), and Barcelona (1922-23), he led a military coup d'état in 1923, inaugurating a dictatorship (1923-30). He brought the Moroccan War to an end in 1927, but soon afterwards lost the support of the army, the ruling class, and King Alfonso XIII. He resigned in 1930. His son José Antonio (1903-36) founded the Spanish Fascist Party Falange Española (1933), and was executed by the Republicans.
