Propertius, Sextus c.48-c.15BC
Roman elegiac poet

Born probably in Asisium (Assisi), Italy, he was educated in Rome and became a poet. He won the favour of Maecenas, to whom he dedicated a book of his poems, and of Augustus. The central figure of his inspiration was his mistress, Cynthia, to whom he devoted his first book of poems, the only one published during his lifetime.
