Rambouillet, Catherine de Vivonne, Marquise de 1588-1665
French noblewoman

She was born in Rome, the daughter of Jean de Vivonne, Marquis of Pisani. At the age of 12 she was married to the son of the Marquis de Rambouillet, who succeeded to the title in 1611. She disliked the morals and manners of the French court, and for 50 years she gathered together in the famous Hôtel de Rambouillet the talent and wit of the French nobility and literary world, including Condé, François de Malherbe and Pierre Corneille. Although later satirized by Moličre for its preciosity, her salon helped to set the standard for correct and elegant language.
