Rivers, Anthony Woodville, 2nd Earl c.1442-1483
English nobleman
The son of Richard Woodville 1st Earl, and brother of Elizabeth Woodville (who married Edward IV in 1464), he gave his allegiance (1461) to Edward, who made him Captain-General of the forces. He followed Edward into exile (1470), becoming Lieutenant of Calais, and helped him make his triumphant return (1471). He was governor of the Prince of Wales (the future Edward V), and translated from French the Dictes and Sayings of the Philosophers which William Caxton published (1477); it was the first dated book published in England. After King Edward's death, he was executed by Richard III.
