Rossetti, William Michael 1829-1919
English critic

He was the son of Gabriele Rossetti and brother of Christina and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He worked as an inland revenue official, but was chiefly a man of letters. He became one of the seven Pre-Raphaelite 'brothers', and edited their manifesto The Germ (1850). He was art critic of The Spectator from 1850, wrote biographies of Shelley and Keats, and published editions of Coleridge, Milton, William Blake and Walt Whitman. Like all his family he was devoted to the study of Dante, whose Inferno he translated. He also wrote memoirs of his brother (1895) and his sister (1904).
