Rostand, Edmond 1868-1918
French poet and dramatist

He was born in Marseilles. He published Les Musardises ('Dawdlings'), a volume of verse, in 1890, but rose to fame with Cyrano de Bergerac (1897, Eng trans 1898; also trans by Anthony Burgess for the film by Jean Paul Rappeneau, 1992), L'Aiglon (1900, Eng trans 1900), Chantecler (1910, Eng trans 1910), and other plays in verse which eschewed the prevailing moods of Naturalism and Expressionism in favour of a lighter, more vivacious popular style.
