French scholar

Born in Semur in Burgundy, he studied philosophy at Paris and law at Heidelberg (1606-09), where he professed Protestantism. His chief work, Plinianae Exercitationes in Solinum, appeared in 1629; after this he mastered Hebrew, Arabic and Coptic. In 1631 he was called to Leyden to occupy Joseph Scaliger's chair. He is best known for his Defensio Regio pro Carolo I, published in 1649 at the request of Charles II, which was answered by Milton in 1651 with his Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio.
