Scribe, (Augustin) Eugčne 1791-1861
French dramatist
He was born in Paris. After 1816 his productions became so popular that he established a 'theatre workshop' in which numerous collaborateurs turned out plays under his supervision. The best known are Un Verre d'eau (1850, Eng trans A Glass of Water, 1851), Adrienne Lecouvreur (1848, Eng trans 1883) and Bataille des dames (1851, Eng trans The Ladies' Battle!, 1851). Scribe also wrote novels and composed the libretti for 60 operas, including Fra Diavolo (1842, Eng trans 1857), Les Huguenots (1842, Eng trans The Huguenots, 1842) and Le Prophčte (1847, Eng trans The Prophet, 1850).
