Sharp, Granville 1735-1813
English abolitionist

He was born in Durham. In 1758 he acquired a post in the ordnance department, but resigned in 1776 on account of his sympathy with American independence. He was active in the anti-slavery movement and, while defending a black immigrant named James Sommersett (or Somerset), he won a legal decision that secured the freedom of any slave who set foot on British soil. He worked with Thomas Clarkson for the abolition of Negro slavery, and developed a plan for a home for freed slaves in Sierra Leone.
