Sheridan, Philip Henry 1831-88
US soldier

Born in Albany, New York, of Irish parentage, he commanded a Federal division at the beginning of the American Civil War (1861-65), and took part in many of the campaigns. In 1864 he was given command of the Army of the Shenandoah, turning the valley into a barren waste, and defeating General Robert E Lee. He had a further victory at Five Forks in 1865, and was active in the final battles which led to Lee's surrender. He never lost a battle.
