Sherman, John 1823-1900
US statesman
He was born in Lancaster, Ohio, the brother of General William Sherman. He was in turn chairman of financial committees in both Houses of Congress. He was largely responsible for the bills dealing with the reconstruction of the seceded states and for the resumption of specie payment in 1879. He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1877 and in 1878 prepared a redemption fund in gold that raised the legal tender notes to par value. In 1881 and 1887 he was again returned to the senate and became its president, and was afterwards chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, and Secretary of State (1897-98). The Sherman Act (1890; repealed 1893) sanctioned large purchases of silver by the Treasury.
