Sisley, Alfred 1839-99
French Impressionist painter and etcher

Born in Paris of English ancestry, he joined Claude Monet and Renoir in the studio of Charles Gleyre and was also influenced by Camille Corot. He painted mostly landscapes, particularly in the valleys of the Seine, the Loire and the Thames, and was noted for his subtle treatment of skies.
