Smith, Al(fred Emanuel) 1873-1944
US politician

Born in New York City, he rose from newsboy to be Governor of New York State (1919-20, 1923-28). Nicknamed the 'Happy Warrior' by his friend Franklin D Roosevelt, he was the first Roman Catholic to run for US president, becoming the Democratic candidate in 1928. He campaigned as an opponent of Prohibition but lost the race to Herbert Hoover. In the 1930s he was an opponent of Roosevelt's New Deal.
