Stanislavsky, professional name of Konstantin Sergeyevich Alekseyev 1863-1938
Russian actor, theatre director and teacher

Born in Moscow, he co-founded the Moscow Society of Art and Literature (1888) and in 1898 he helped to found the Moscow Arts Theatre, which became an influential company. He gave up acting because of illness, but his teaching and his system of actor-training were major contributions to 20th-century theatre. The 'Method' style derived from his teaching is characterized by improvisation, spontaneity, and an emphasis on psychological realism, and has been widely practised, especially in the USA.
