Tamm, Igor Yevgenevich 1895-1971
Soviet physicist and Nobel Prize winner
Born in Vladivostock, he was educated at the universities of Edinburgh and Moscow, and taught at Moscow State University (1924-34) before moving to the Physics Institute of the Academy. Together with Ilya Frank he developed a theory to describe the 'Cherenkov effect' discovered by Pavel Cherenkov. They demonstrated that this radiation is due to a particle moving through a medium faster than the speed of light in the medium, and related the type of radiation observed to the particle mass and velocity. Tamm shared the 1958 Nobel Prize for physics with Cherenkov and Frank for this work. The effect has been utilized in highly sensitive particle detectors.

A wildcard is a special character you can use to replace one or more characters in a word. There are two types of wildcard. The first is a question mark ?, which matches a single character. The second is an asterisk *, which matches zero or more characters. The two kinds of wildcard can be mixed in a single search.
