Trevelyan, G(eorge) M(acaulay) 1876-1962
English historian

Born in Welcombe, Warwickshire, the son of Sir George Otto Trevelyan, he was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, of which he was elected Master (1940-51). He served in World War I and was Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge (1927-40). He is best known for his English Social History (1944), a companion volume to his History of England (1926). Other works include studies of Garibaldi (1907, 1909, 1911) and John Bright (1913), British History in the Nineteenth Century (1922), and several volumes of lectures and essays, including an autobiography (1949).
