Tyler, Wat d.1381
English rebel, leader of the Peasants' Revolt

He was probably a tiler from Essex, chosen by a mob of peasants to be their spokesman after taking Rochester Castle (1381). Under him they moved to Canterbury, Blackheath and London. At a conference with Richard II at Smithfield, London, demanding an end to serfdom and greater freedom of labour, blows were exchanged and Tyler was wounded by William Walworth, Mayor of London. Walworth had him dragged out from St Bartholomew's Hospital and beheaded.
