Umberto II 1904-83
King of Italy

Made de facto regent (Lieutenant-General of the Realm) by his father, Victor Emmanuel III in 1944, he ascended the throne on the latter's abdication (1946), at a time when the monarchy had become widely unpopular. In a referendum later the same year Italians voted in favour of a republic and Umberto was forced to leave Italy, setting up residence in Portugal as the self-styled Count Di Sarre.
