Vuillard, (Jean) Édouard 1868-1940
French artist

Born in Cuiseaux, he shared a studio with Pierre Bonnard, and was strongly influenced by Paul Gauguin and by the vogue for Japanese painting. Although his outlook was limited and mainly devoted to flower pieces and to simple and intimate interiors, these are painted with an exquisite sense of light and colour. He also produced murals for public buildings, such as the Théâtre des Champs-Elysees and Palais de Chaillot.
