English churchman and statesman

He became a judge (1185), dean of York and Bishop of Salisbury (1189), and accompanied Richard I on the Third Crusade (1190-93). Appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1193, he helped to raise the ransom to secure Richard's release from captivity, and to contain the rebellion of the King's brother, John. He was made Justiciar of England (1193-98), and was responsible for all the business of government. On John's accession (1199) he became Chancellor.
