Weizsäcker, Carl Friedrich Weizsäcker, Freiherr von 1912-
German physicist

Born in Kiel and educated at the universities of Berlin, Göttingen and Leipzig, he was appointed associate professor at the University of Strasbourg before becoming Professor of Philosophy at Hamburg. Independently of Hans Bethe, he proposed that the source of energy in stars is chain nuclear fusion reactions (1938) and described the 'carbon cycle' sequence of reactions involved. In a development of Pierre Laplace's work, he also suggested a possible mechanism for the formation of the planets.
