Whiteman, Paul 1891-1967
US bandleader

He was born in Denver, Colorado. He became famous in the 1920s as a pioneer of 'sweet style', as opposed to the traditional 'classical' style jazz. His band employed such brilliant exponents of true jazz as the trumpeter Bix Beiderbecke, and Whiteman became popularly regarded as the 'inventor' of jazz itself rather than of a deviation from true jazz style. He was responsible for George Gershwin's experiments in 'symphonic' jazz, commissioning the Rhapsody in Blue for a concert in New York in 1924.
