Whittier, John Greenleaf 1807-92
US Quaker poet and abolitionist

Born near Haverhill, Massachusetts, he was largely self-educated. In 1829 he entered journalism, and in 1831 published Legends of New England, a collection of poems and stories. In 1840 he settled at Amesbury, a village near his birthplace, and devoted himself to the cause of emancipation. His later works include the collection In War Time (1864), which contains the well-known ballad 'Barbara Frietchie', and At Sundown (1892).
