Wilson, Richard 1714-82
Welsh landscape painter

Born in Penegoes rectory, Powys, he gave up portrait painting for landscape after a visit to Italy (1749-56) and anticipated Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable in forsaking strait-laced Classicism for a lyrical freedom of style. In London in 1760 he exhibited his Niobe. Also famous was his View of Rome from the Villa Madama. In 1776 he became Librarian to the Royal Academy.
