Rice, Sir Tim(othy Miles Bindon) 1944-
English lyricist

Born in Buckinghamshire, he studied law, but abandoned it to join the record company EMI. As a first musical contribution he wrote the lyrics to music by Andrew Lloyd Webber for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (1968). The partnership went on to produce Jesus Christ Superstar (1971), Evita (1978) and Cricket (1986). Rice has also written Chess (1984), to music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus; the lyrics for the film musical Aladdin (1992) to music by Alan Menken, which earned him the 1993 Best Original Song Oscar for 'A Whole New World'; Beauty and the Beast (1994), also with Menken; and The Lion King (1994), to music by Elton John. In addition to his television appearances and various publications, he has been chairman of the newly formed Foundation for Sport and the Arts since 1991. He was knighted in 1994.
