Gregory XI, originally Pierre Roger de Beaufort 1329-78
French pope

He became pope in 1370, and despite the opposition of France and his own family, he ended the Babylonian Captivity of the papacy, moving its seat from Avignon to its original place in Rome (1377). He was the last French pope, and the elections held after his death began the Great Schism.
