Huerta, Victoriano 1854-1916
Mexican dictator

Born in Colotlán, Jalisco state, he was a Huichol Indian who joined the Mexican army and advanced to the rank of general during the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz. After Díaz went into exile, Huerta became an ally of liberal President Francisco Madero, commanding the federal forces that suppressed the uprisings of Emiliano Zapata (1911) and others. In 1913, however, he overthrew Madero's regime and declared himself President of Mexico, dissolving the legislature and violently suppressing all opposition. When the US government withdrew its support and revolutionaries such as Zapata, Venustiano Carranza and Pancho Villa joined together to fight him, Huerta was forced into exile (1914).
